A magnitude 9 earthquake struck off the coast of north-east Japan at 2:46 on Friday March 11th 2011. The tsunami that followed devastated the coastline of Sendai, Iwate and Fukushima, leveling whole towns and villages killing around thirty thousand people. Hundreds of thousands were also left homeless by the fifteen to twenty-five meter waves.
