Homelessness has been a growing albeit all but invisible problem in Japan since the economic bubble burst at the end of the 1990s. Homelessness has been a growing albeit all but invisible problem in Japan since the economic bubble burst at the end of the 1990s. Many Japanese people refuse to accept the reality of homeless people sleeping on the streets and in the parks of Tokyo and other major cities but recently as further economic woes affect more and more people, there has been a gradual acceptance of the problem and a growing sympathy towards those that find themselves in this situation. This has led to louder calls, from all sections of Japanese society, for government action and more official efforts to take on some of the tasks of helping the homeless and under-employed that have been carried out by charities and volunteers to date.
