2021 COVID-19 State of Emergency in Tokyo

In response to a apparent second-wave of COVID-19 infections that is setting-records for numbers of infections and after calls to act by Tokyo Governor, Yuriko Koike, Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga stated on January 4th 2021 that he is prepared to re-impose a state of emergency,, similar to the one called in Spring 2020. The SOE may begin as early as Saturday January 9th and though it will not have the legal powers to enforce restrictions on people's movements it will probably advise businesses to close or limit opening times and urge people to avoid going out or travelling unnecessarily. PM Suga is keen to avoid a restrictive lockdown as his poor handling of the continuing Coronavirus pandemic has seen is popularity tumble
