Construction on the tower began on July 14th 2008 and finished on February 29th 2012. Tokyo Skytree,, which is the tallest freestanding tower in the world, serves as the primary television and radio broadcast tower for the Kantō region of Japan, replacing the iconic Tokyo Tower which is now surrounded by tall buildings and unable to give full digital coverage. It opened to the public on May 22nd 2012.as the centre-piece a large commercial development funded by Tobu Railway and a group of six terrestrial broadcasters headed by the national broadcaster, NHK.
