In the countryside around Bukittinggi on the island of Sumatra bullfighting is a popular pastime. Fights take place every Tuesday and Saturday evening, the most well known being those in Padang Lawas six kilometres south of Bukittinggi. In the local Minang Kabau culture however the honour a bull is given is more than a passion for such contests, the name Minang Kabau actually means "triumphant buffalo" and comes from a legend about the defeat of an invading Javanese king who wagered the outcome of his campaign on a bullfight.
