SoftBank Robotics launched the 1.2 metre high semi-humanoid Pepper on June 5th 2014, It was show-cased in the company's mobile phone stores afterwards and became the face of the technology conglomerate.
Pepper was marketed on its unique ability to read emotions and remember faces and functioned as a hospitality and companionship robot.
Only around 27,000 units were produced. Culture clashes between the French and Japanese side of the business (French robotics company, Aldebaran Robotics was acquired by Softbank in 2015) hurt the robot's development. A high price tag combined with and its limited functionality and apparent unreliability impacted on sales.
At the end of June 2021 Softbank announced that it would be laying of staff and had paused production of the Pepper Robot.
