Tamogami was forced to resign his position as a general in the JASDF when he wrote a essay questioning the accepted history of Japan's aggression in the 1930s and 40s. He leads the right-wing pressure and political group, Ganbare Nippon and is supported in his gubernatorial bid by nationalist former governor, Shintaro Ishihara.
