Sugamo is affectionately known as the old lady Harajuku, in reference to the Mecca for youth fashions in the South of Tokyo, and is a popular place for Tokyo's increasingly aged population. The Arai Kannon statue is a famous religious icon at Togan-ji temple in the heart of Sugamo, where people go to rub the statue with a white cloth in the hopes of curing sickness and ensuring a long, healthy life.
