Hamaorisai matsuri

A mikoshi and supporter in silhouette at sunrise during the Hamaorisai matsuri on Southern Beach in Chigasaki, Kanagawa, Japan. Monday July 18th 2005. The festivals marks the celebration of Marine Day in of July. Over thirty Mikoshi or portable shrines are carried through the night from surrounding shrines to arrive on the beach for sunrise. They are then carried into the surf to purify them.
