Fumiaki Hoshino was a student activist during the turbulent anti-Vietnam war demos of the 1970s. He was arrested in 1975 for the murder of a policeman in a riot in Shibuya in 1971 and sentenced to life imprisonment despite there being important issues with the case that cast doubt on Hoshino's guilt. He remains incarcerated to this day. His wife, Akiko Hoshino campaigns for his release. Hoshino san was allowed to begin painting in the prison art class a few years ago and the Free Hoshino campaign began by his wife puts on regular exhibitions of his art to raise awareness of this long-serving political prisoner who is virtually unknown domestically or internationally..
